Hydroalp is playing a key role in the development of 12 new hydroelectric power plants with a total of 18 turbines in the Tuscany Region (Italy), along with PAC S.p.A. which will participate as the EPC, by supplying all hydroelectric generation units, the power plants, and the automation necessary for the recovery of weirs in the 55-kilometer area between Incisa and Le Signe.
The project
Initiated by the Tuscany Region, the construction of these hydroelectric power plants aims to redevelop and recover the historic weirs along the Arno River. The goal is to create new efficient structures that not only preserve biodiversity and cultural heritage but also meet the energy needs of local communities. By saving an estimated 25000 tons of CO2 annually and generating 55 GW of power – equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 20000 households – these revitalized weirs are set to make a significant environmental impact. The weirs, some of which date back several centuries and were historically used for generating motive power, have undergone renovation to enhance hydraulic safety along the river and establish ecological corridors for the fish fauna.
The new hydroelectric power plants feature fish ladders and spacious reservoirs to capture river water. After passing through turbines, the water flows back into the Arno River, creating a sustainable energy cycle that minimizes environmental impact.
Three of these plants – Incisa, Compiobbi, and Traversa dell’Isolotto – are already operational, with the latter hosting a flowing water turbine capable of producing 7400 GWh/yr with a head of 6.5 meters and a flow rate of 30 cubic meters per second. The president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Giani, emphasizes the importance of balancing hydraulic safety with environmental sustainability, while Environment Councilor Monia Monni highlights the innovative and eco-friendly nature of the project, which will allow the production of clean energy for years to come.
All systems are developed through Project Financing with Iniziative Toscane. Construction is underway for the remaining nine plants, all of which will be operational by 2025.
