Turbines

Hydroalp is specialised in the design and construction of hydropower turbines as well as turbine refurbishment and operates as an EPC contractor in the construction of technologically advanced hydroelectric power plants.
Hydroalp’s technical department follows the design of hydropower turbines, considering all the different engineering, technological, and environmental aspects.

  • Site analysis and evaluation of water resources
  • Turbine type choice
  • Turbine sizing and design
  • Control system design
  • Integration with the hydropower plant

The optimal configuration of turbines, including the design of the internal fluid system of machines, is performed with the use of numerical check calculation tools and CFD simulation software.

Three-dimensional calculation codes enable the analysis of the main parameters that determine the performance of a machine both at a global and a local level in internal areas. The CFD-assisted development of a project guarantees the optimisation of turbines on the basis of the expected installation values by refining blade forms and determining inner dimensions in order to create a machine that perfectly meets your requirements. Therefore, it is possible to “virtually” validate the performance of a turbine already at the design stage before starting production.

Analysis of rotating and stationary geometries, complete machines under steady state or transient conditions, single, bi- or three-phase fluid, study of the interactions with the free surfaces of tanks or canals, fluid-structure interaction, etc. are some of the services offered by Hydroalp in the fluid dynamics and structural field.

Hydroalp installs Francis turbines for medium-head plants from a few tens of metres up to about one hundred metres, with flow rates from a few tens of litres up to a few cubic meters per second.
Francis turbines are the most efficient turbines available. On the other hand, their operating capacity is limited with variable flow, therefore, in some cases, it is necessary to distribute the maximum flow rate among various groups of them. As they are of reaction type, these turbines are equipped with an exhaust diffuser that allows them to exploit the whole head available

Hydroalp supplies Pelton turbines for high-head plants from almost one hundred metres up to over one thousand metres, with flow rates from a few litres to a few cubic metres per second, thanks to the possibility to vary the number of jets. In special cases like culverts or micro-plants, we can also offer system solutions based on PAT technology (pumps used as turbines). Thanks to the possibility of supplying a wide variety of turbines, Hydroalp can always find the ideal solution for your plant.

Hydroalp provides Kaplan turbines for low-head plants, from a few metres to tens of metres, with flow rates from a few cubic metres up to a few tens of cubic metres per second. Kaplan turbines are the best technical solution for all those sites where low head and high flow coexist.
Kaplan turbines are available in various configurations to better suit the characteristics of a site and with single as well as double regulation, depending on the necessity to operate at low flow rates. Because they are of reaction type, these turbines are equipped with an exhaust diffuser that allows them to exploit the whole head available.
